Unhealthy?

GuildWars characters are running all over he place all the time.

Even if someone has 'thick bones', he will never be fat doing that, she will be more like... male warriors.

On top of that, less models means faster loading.

If you want a fat character, why not mod your character to a fat person?
Could work, take time but it could work couldn't it?

Im not a graphics modder but i dont think it works like that. If im right in thinking they wrap textures round the body meshes. Therefore its the same as making a black bear into a polar bear...same size different look.
But i may be wrong

I think a couple people here don't understand the difference between fat and muscular. Male Mesmers aren't chubby, although I will admit they do run kinda funny like a fat person might. Male Warriors are big because they are muscular. Stefan the henchman however, is a little more on the chubby side than other warriors in the game.

I just think warriors are NFL line-backers/Line-men/HB/FB/QB body type. They are all big, but thats because of muscles.

Having fat characters will defintely not be good as it reinforces the sterotypes that gamers are unathletic fat nerds, even though there is a segment of gamers who CLEARLY dont fit that that mold.

We can't have fat people on gw. People play it because they want fiction this would show the reality.

Exactly!

This is a fantasy game is it not?

What the hell would I want to go round seeing myself in armour for? I'm a fat old git and to be honest, I'm quite taken with the fantasy in my head of a muscular monster like my warrior going round killing things.
I really dont like the idea of seeing a fat, wallowing blob like me running around in very tight armour!...no thanks!
Its hard enough looking in the mirror let alone watching it in a fantasy game. You dont see any of the fantasy characters in films like Conan and LoTR running around overweight and puffing their lungs on the floor...
And as for the "friar Tuck"anologies, If im not mistaken he used to ride around in a horse and cart a lot!...Cant see the need for it in GW

The warriors or mesmers arnt fat...

the mesmers natural stance has his gut out stretched and the warriors are kind of a mix of stocky and out built (expanding the muscle outward while building) but no where near fat.

Though I agree that everyone looks like they got picked out of a Abercombi and Finch agency.

All these characters do is run? At what point are they meant to be ABLE to get fat???

The body types are realistic to the type of exercise all these characters do.

If only REAL people could take this example and actually look after their bodies then maybe RL wouldn't have so many goddamn overweight people. Seriously, if there's an obesity problem in the world, why would we want to support it by allowing overweight characters in our computer games? That's certainly sending out a message to all those 13yo's saying 'seriously guys, look at all the cool stuff you can do if you're a fat RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO!'

No way. Sorry. It's a terrible idea.

This is why you'll never be able to create a fat character. The one constant in guildwars besides death....Running!! All GW characters RUN everywhere, therefore are in excellent shape all the time. Even in cities, going from storage to Merchant...running. Running = no fat characters...sorry :P

I'm sure they'll make certain races to be fat...but I don't want the females of the human-like races to be fat or I'm not playing! (I prefer fiction to my entire city)

No, they aren't:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Norgu
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Stefan
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Little_Thom

Not at all, XD...

One thing is plumpy, other thing is obese.
Characters could be like Norgu or Little Thom, but not like... eh... that previously seen ninja...

I mean, as long as it's health-looking, it should work.

wait a minute, to be fair, they don't really run as much as jog. and at that, they aren't reallly jogging that far. how long does it take to jog from ascalon to sardelac, 2.5 mins? how far is that in real distance? if an average human can jog at around 2 miles an hour or so, than that puts the distance at around 450 feet, right? i mean, our game isn't played on continents so much as large islands, really.

and the fat epidemic isn't relegated soley to America... geeze

ok, so this is a fantasy game, well, lets look there some too. Tolkien invented modern fantasy, i think we can all agree on that. didn't the Fellowship of the Ring run for days without stopping, that group including an overweight Dwarf and 3 Hobbits. who is to say that fantasy precludes obese fitness. anyway, Clinton used to jog several miles a day, and he was pretty chubby then.

what i was getting at is that horizontal proportions should be selectable as much as vertical is during character design. i think the diversity would be great.

stereotype - schmereotype.... you know, stereotypes exist for a reason... but, i disagree that it reinforces any stereotypes. i am 37, 6'0", 180, and not obese. i carry about 12% body fat. my calorie output is 3000+ daily or so, and my input is close to that, allowing me to maintain my physical stature.
that being said, who cares? i mean, most of the female characters are played by males, right? isn't that reinforcing a stereotype of sorts; one in which young men like to look at scantily clad young women? we could second guess the psychology of gamers all day and hit or miss all day too. so its irrelevant to this topic.

if anything, not being able to create rotund characters is a form of elitism that has existed in the comic book world since the late '70s. (the original Captain America had a paunch, so did Shazam, they were prior to the 1970's)

i really didn't intend for this discussion to get quite so serious, btw. my apologies. i just thought it would be fun to play a overweight Hammer Warrior.
